event organized by over 25 galleries throughout northern Chelsea. With busy summer schedules,

will offer extended hours and special events that showcase the vibrancy of the summer arts scene
in Chelsea, while local sponsors will offer food and drink specials throughout the evening.

Puma and Usain Bolt have partnered together to introduce a new line of clothing, The Bolt Collection. Droga5 thought of Giles to help create the bold creative images that would help launch this campaign. Giles shot Bolt along with Puma athletes Leslie Osbourne, Delilah DeCresenco, Jason DeMerritt and Natasha Kari.  They went to locations with strong colors and graphic visuals around the Miami area to capture the background plates. Giles came up with a technique that required him to use various cameras in non traditional ways to capture these images.  This global campaign is currently out in the Puma stores and on the website.

Martin Schoeller photographed Marina Abramovic for The New Yorker’s profile about the performance artist and the exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present. The performance retrospective, traces the prolific career of Marina Abramović (Yugoslav, b. 1946) with approximately fifty works spanning over four decades of her early interventions and sound pieces, video works, installations, photographs, solo performances, and collaborative performances made with Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen).

Martin also photographed race-car driver Danica Patrick for The New Yorker’s story “Changing Lanes,” by Peter J. Boyer.

VAUGHAN HANNIGAN agent Lee Jennings recently sat down with Alessandra Petlin, who had just returned from her week in Louisiana shooting portraits on the coast for People Magazine.

Lee Jennings (LJ): Tell me about the assignment – what was the brief from the magazine?

Alessandra Petlin (AP): The Faces of Disaster: portraits of all the different kinds of people that are directly affected by this catastrophic disaster in the Gulf. They wanted a series heroic, dynamic, environmental portraits full of strength and emotion.

LJ: What excited you about this assignment?

AP: To be right in the middle of history. I knew it would be a real adventure and a tremendous challenge but one of great emotional weight and extremely rewarding in terms of getting out there what the people in the Gulf were experiencing.

LJ: Had you been to Louisiana before this trip?

AP: I have been in New Orleans a number of times, but I had never traveled throughout Louisiana. I had never been in the bayous and marshlands and experienced the life and culture there.

LJ: You photographed a number of people over the course of your time on the bayou – did you have a favorite subject?

AP: They were all incredible, generous with their stories, their way of life (which may very well be over), and what they were living through right now. But I would have to say that Angel Dassau, the shrimper now working as a maid, won my heart, from the moment she stepped in front of the camera she hit me with everything she had, everything inside her. All the pain, the rage at BP and what she has lost. She kept telling me “I’m a shrimper, this is all me and my husband know, this is the life we love, being on the water, being on the boat, and the community of all the people who live the life of the sea. We don’t want to do anything else.” She put it all out there for me with such dignity and defiance and, ultimately, the strength of who she is as a person.

LJ: I understand it was a crazy week – trips to the ER, wearing Hazmat suits in 95 degree weather, driving all over the bayou – any good stories you can share?

AP: When I was shooting one of the BP clean up sites on Grand Isle and the workers who had been brought in from all over the country to do this work there was a tremendous amount of security. We had to be brought in by a BP representative through all the various police and BP internal security check points and have an official escort at all times. When we left the site and stopped at a local gas station I realized that I had left my bag with all my contacts and my cell phone on one of the sand vehicles that carried us onto the beach. We turned around and drove back to the 1st police checkpoint and explained what had happened. There were two police cars and the man in the first refused to let us back through to retrieve my bag. He said we needed to have a BP representative with us and to call that person to come get us. I explained I had no phone and no way of contacting them. He couldn’t care less and said there was no way for us to re-enter. There was a standoff and finally the second police officer took mercy on me. He got out of his car and ordered me out of mine and told me he would escort only me back in but that I had to ride with him. He put me in the back, in the cage. I was locked inside the car with bars all around me. I had never experienced that before. He told me it wasn’t so bad at least he wasn’t taking me to jail. I said I guess you’re right and tried to enjoy the ride. The funny thing was my cousin called while I was separated from my bag and the onsite police answered my phone and told her I was gone but they didn’t know where. She was really freaked out.

LJ: Southern hospitality: reality or myth? Any good stories or people you want to thank for their kindness?

AP: It’s definitely not a myth, it’s standard amongst everyone we met. Probably the best example was when I was barefoot and shooting a mock graveyard from on top of our truck. While climbing up there I hit the lock button with my toe but that’s another story. Anyway I jumped down and when I hit the ground I burst a blood vessel in my calf. It was pretty nasty and I had to go to the emergency room. When I got to the emergency room, I went to triage and the nurse told me it would be a 3 to 4 hour wait which wasn’t possible for me because we still had quite a drive to our next location for an early morning shoot and I signed myself out. It was pretty late, we hadn’t eaten yet and we were on a remote road. As we were pulling out I saw this little sign for Rose’s Cafe. I went on in ahead of my crew and was limping. This amazing woman who was Rose’s daughter swooped in on me and said “Baby what’s happened? She sat me down, put my leg up on a chair. I showed her my calf and  she went into action. She brought me an ice pack, bandaged my leg, gave me some Tylenol and called for the bar tender next door, a wonderful older woman in a housedress and slammed a drink down in front of me. Then she fed us her famous family recipe of gumbo and the most delicious sweet potato fries. I would like to thank her and Rose of Rose’s Cafe.

LJ: What’s the best thing you ate on your trip?

AP: Well, I love oysters and once a year I let myself have them fried if I’m in the South. I had a plate of the sweetest, fattest oysters I’ve ever had, fried to perfection.

LJ: How are you adjusting to being back in NYC?

AP: The first few days back were definitely an adjustment. I was full with all the tragedy I had witnessed, the way of life lost, but also the passion, humility and strength of everyone I met and photographed.

Alessandra Petlin’s unique style of portraiture reflects her deep  knowledge of art history and her love of modern cinema. She is both director and cinematographer in one artist. Alessandra’s talent for revealing the particular humanity of each  of her subjects and the striking intimacy that characterizes her work is grounded  in her empathy and  ability to establish a strong connection  of trust with every person she  photographs.

Alessandra was born is Paris and raised in New York City. After many paths she finally found her passion in photography and attended   Art Center in Pasadena, CA.  After graduating she returned to New York and was quickly named one  of PDN’s 30 emerging artists.  Alessandra’s work has been featured  in The New York Times Magazine, New York magazine, Esquire, GQ, Marie Claire and Wired. She has won numerous awards from American Photography, Communication Arts and SPD.
