Martin recently sat down with PetaPixel to talk about his photography career, his “Close-Up” portraits and offered some advice to young artists. We have included an excerpt below but head to PetaPixel to read the whole conversation.

PP: Do you think these close-ups are something you’ll continue doing for the rest of your career? Will they stick with you?

MS: Yeah, you know, I made a mistake and stopped doing them for a while. A friend of mine said ‘Oh, you got to reinvent yourself, you’ve done a lot of those.’ Then I started doing them a little bit differently. I even started shooting with an eight-by-ten-inch camera. But I will keep on doing them now. I think It’s important to have one style. There’s no reason to stop doing it, really, because Richard Avedon took all of his pictures in front of a white background. With an eight-by-ten or something and a medium-format camera. I mean he never changed his style, ever.

He barely showed a color picture. So why would I [stop taking them] now? After I’ve been doing them for fifteen years, why would I think ‘now I’m going to start doing some self-portraits’?

Magazines like them, people like them. That’s telling. Why would Diane Albus now all of a sudden start shooting color or change up her lighting? She did the same thing all of her life. Weegee did the same thing all of his life.

It doesn’t mean I can’t do other bodies of work that I can light differently, or that are very differently conceptually. I’m still in the same position I was fifteen years ago. You get an assignment, and you have very little time with somebody. You’re in a location that you haven’t chosen, they’re wearing something that you might not like. But [with] the close-up you’re in this fortunate position of always walking away with something where nothing else but the person matters.

It doesn’t matter where they are or what they’re wearing. So it feels like an honest portrait that sometimes is impossible to take given the circumstances that you’re handed.

The “Art Producers Speak” column on “A Photo Editor” is for Art Producers/Buyers to anonymously nominate photographers to be featured. Today, VAUGHAN HANNIGAN photographer, Kyle Alexander, was was highlighted with an interview and bevy of work. We have included a snip-it from the interview below about Kyle’s experience in the industry, but head over to their site to read the entire article.

How many years have you been in business?
Hmmmm…more than a couple…..not an easy answer for that one, after college I moved from Austin, Texas to Hawaii to shoot surfing on the north shore of Oahu which was really fun and amazing but I couldn’t really make a living over there. At that time it was shooting film, you got 36 images and then have to swim in and change film in your waterhousing, go out shoot another roll, swim in and then run to the lab, have it developed and FedEx’ed overnight to the magazines in Southern California and by that time you were exhausted and broke. I worked crappy side jobs and tried to make it work for a while but never really go ahead.

Then one day I got lucky and got a job on a tv show in Hawaii and worked on that for a couple of years and along the way met some guys who said if you ever get out to LA give us a call. So I looked at my options at that point and said I better move to LA. I was penniless with not much hope of ever making it out there in Hawaii. That was in 2001 and I got lucky again because I hooked up with some steady work on feature films and commercials. It was then I met someone who also produced photo shoots and needed some help so I worked with her for a bit. The first real photo shoot I worked on was a huge budget Tommy Hilfiger shoot, 2 weeks on the Paramount Studios backlot. Patrick Demarchelier was the photographer and it was a amazing and humbling experience to watch him work. This experience inspired me and I began shooting as much as I could when not assisting. However that was not too often, I assisted for about 7 years for dozens of different photographers.

One of the first things I did after I was in LA made a few bucks was buy a computer and because of that someone asked me to do some callsheets and light pre-production work so I ended up producing some editorial stories for Mens Journal and Marie Claire magazine. That introduced me to some photographers who later on hired me to produce some ad shoots, which was great because with all the producing money I could do more test shoots. So my first real break was an ad shoot for Roxy/Quiksilver in 2008. So I did that shoot but then still had to assist and produce and digital tech to make ends meet. So I would get a couple of ad and editorial jobs here and there but not enough to break away.

Finally in 2011 I got enough shooting work that I was able to turn down producing and teching and assisting gigs. So long story short, taking pics- 20+ years, working in the business-10 + years, making my living as a full time photographer- 2+ years.

A Testament to Love, Artist Statement by Julia Fullerton-Batten, 2013

‘A Testament to Love’ is a narrative about the struggles of life when love goes wrong.

The women in my images wrestle with the eternal search for a happy ending, but find themselves left with feelings of solitude, loneliness, fear, regret and resignation. Are they searching for a meaning to their lives or just waiting for something to happen.

Each image is set against a cinematic background, which is inspired by the style of locations and lighting in Hollywood films from the 1960s and 1970s as well as the iconic work of Edward Hopper. I use hard lighting and prefer atmospheric skies to heighten the drama in broad daylight.

These images are like stills from a movie and I have captured the moment just before or just after the climax of the scenario. They illustrate the outcome of an unsuccessful meeting with a lover, the product of a painful goodbye or maybe just a reflection of our own inner anxieties.

These scenarios are laden with emotion and tension and leave the viewer with more questions than answers. However the women are not simply passive recipients of life’s drama but an integral part with their own important roles to play. They are empowered.

Are they being followed or are they following? Are they leaving or have they been left?

It’s up to the viewer to decide, but I would guess the conclusions reveal as much about the viewers experiences as my intentions.

Floto + Warner have shot a wealth of images for their editorial clients recently. This month’s Dwell Magazine featured a cover story which takes us to the home of Glee star, Jayma Mays, and actor, Adam Campbell. The Southern California Spanish Colonial house had been renovated numerous times since its construction in the 20′s, but was ultimately re-envisioned by architect, Mike Jacobs. For GQ Germany, the couple photographed the stark, minimal Manhattan apartment of of MoMA PS1 Director, Klaus Biesenbach. Bloomberg Pursuits commissioned them to shoot art conservators, Contemporary Conservation Ltd, who deal in the ever growing need to maintain the constantly shifting landscape of mediums used in modern art.

Julia was selected to judge this month’s Life Framer competition, A Human Touch. She recently sat down with them to answer some questions regarding her style, technique, and new projects.

Your blog has some fascinating insight, and it seems that your shoots are often quite grand affairs with a team of hair and make-up artists, prop stylists etc (and all the better for it). Now that you feel accustomed to having a team around you, do you still enjoy being alone with a camera?
I always carry a camera with me; the shoots themselves are only a minor part of the use of a camera. Not only do I use my camera for personal shoots, but also to find new ideas and to flesh out the bare bones of them once I decide to go ahead with one. I had a solo show in Tokyo a few weeks back and decided to stay on and take photos. I had a translator and an assistant with me. We had minimal lighting that we kept in a suitcase and just walked the streets. Once I found something interesting, we would set up the lights, and I would wait for someone interesting to walk by. This is an approach I used to take, and it felt very refreshing. No hair and make up, no styling, no casting, no brief. Just enjoying photography…

Martin’s cover for New York Magazine was the subject of a post on The Six Floor, a New York Times blog. Arem Dupliessis was intrigued by the cover and reached out to New York Magazine’s Director of Photography, Judy Quon, to get an insider’s perspective on the project. We have included an excerpt below, but head to their site to read more.

What was the initial inspiration behind the image?

We wanted only to hint at Michael-meets-Liberace, since a little goes a long way. Martin Schoeller, the photographer, loved our concept, agreed with the level of subtlety that we thought made sense. Martin’s unique portrait lighting and graphic sensibility made for a terrific combination of reality meets fantasy/artifice.

The touch of makeup above his left eye is subtle, striking and beautiful all at the same time. How did you decide on that approach?

We experimented with the makeup and built it up as we made pictures to see how it was reading in camera. We spoke briefly about which eye, and determined the better eye to be the one on camera right, which would wind up on the right side of the cover — the sweet spot — where a reader’s eye naturally lands. But aside from that it was pretty straightforward.

Gilles & Cecilie Studio was commissioned by creative agency, Thomas.Mattews, to create designs for multiple wards at the Chelsea Children’s Hospital in London. Partnering with fellow illustrator, Malika Favre, they developed a visual narrative to interpret Thomas.Matthews’ creative concept of “My Universe.” The implementation of the concept aimed to enhance a young patient’s experience in the hospital through color and art. Each ward has its own family of alien characters that complement the the “activity” that takes place there.
